ADVENT x FAREWELL was designed as a diptych which symbolizes the beginning and the end of an era, birth and death that accompanies everything coming from this world. It portrays the dawn and the dusk, the light and the shadows, setting the 2 key points without which everything we live would simply not be possible.

But These pieces also celebrate LOVE in its purest form. LOVE being the true bridge between birth and death, and without which all this would be completely useless.  Keep loving, that's all that matters.

Fabian Aerts, aka Southarena, is a multidisciplinary artist from Belgium who creates intricately designed surreal visual environments. Aerts’ PARADIGM series is based on 12 uniquely elaborate fantasy worlds. A tribute to the wonders of nature, the forms and their interactions inside these environments push the limits of physical and natural laws. The artist’s imaginative worlds surprise and challenge us providing a new framework through which to understand our own reality. 

PARADIGM is a series based on 12 unique imaginary worlds. Both strange and mysterious, and far from any civilization, these worlds are regulated by physical and natural laws which are beyond all understanding. Sometimes hostile, sometimes soothing, these worlds surprise us with their wild nature, their abstract and organic essence and take us on a journey to the other side of the mirror.

Parasomnia are undesirable behaviors and experiences that occur during partial arousal from sleep. These disturbing phenomena, including night terrors and sleepwalking, occur during those undefined transitional periods when we are caught between dreams and reality. 

The artworks in this exhibition provoke a similarly disconcerting liminal state. Criss-crossing timelines and warping dimensions, the artists use the flexible parameters of digital space to develop their own eerie universes. Bending the laws of physics and the expectations of biology, they create these uncanny new worlds in exquisite detail. Their dystopian scenes resemble nowhere but remind us of everywhere. Through creating this terrifying aesthetics of anxiety, they provide a surprising and unwelcome contemporary critique. Hauntingly beautiful and intoxicating, the nightmarish visions attract our attention like moths to a flame. As with parasomnia, we are held helplessly captive to these perturbing dreams.

With this selection I focus on the place of worldbuilding in digital creations and our capacity for constructing other spaces and ecosystems that might encompass ideas of futurities or parallel universes. Ursula Le Guin and N. K. Jemisin are inspiring writers who are oracles of a becoming humankind. They allow us to imagine, expand, and extrapolate the evolution of our environments with different parameters to those we have currently set. What can transport us to a threshold of possibilities, environmental parables, and change scenarios and encourage us to question ourselves, our societies, politics, ethics. Worldbuilding is a philosophical tool that challenges us with questions: How is nature defined? What is progress? What is adaptability? These other worlds allow us to imagine how we would live in a climate-changed earth.


This selection is the first part of a fantastic and eerie imaginary environment where new materials, textures, and flora come to play.
