FREE CUT 3

By Nicolas Sassoon

FREE CUT 3 is an animated GIF created in 2010 and one of the first animations I ever published online. The work is part of the series FREE CUTS, a series of digital studies initially conceived as preliminary research for a sculpture project. The animation uses pixelated textures and flashing to emulate materiality on screen through minimal means: a block of matter appears to be cut through, revealing a radiating substance within. This piece marks a very important moment in my work, where I embraced digital animation as my main medium rather than as a transitional step towards other mediums. Shortly after creating this piece, I abandoned my initial sculpture project and decided to exhibit this animation as the actual sculpture. Artwork info: 692 x 660 pixels, 3 frames, 3 colors, 25 fps, 2010. The entire FREE CUTS series is viewable here: http://nicolassassoon.com/FREECUTS.html
